Hey Laidy
Hey Laidy began in 2018 after a lifetime of collecting (hoarding??) vintage clothing including materials and trims. Looking for a creative outlet and to have some ‘me’ time after the birth of my daughter in late 2014, I joined a social sewing class which reignited a passion for sewing and creating. Wanting to avoid a return to the corporate world and with a dream to create something unique and individual, Hey Laidy’s laidback straps were born. Beautiful, timeless accessories that are comfortable and long lasting, embracing the slow fashion ethos, creating heirloom pieces for generations to come.
The hero of these vintage inspired designs is the eco-friendly hemp webbing and beautiful jacquard ribbons. I chose hemp as the basis of my straps for so many reasons. It is such an awesome plant with so many uses! Hemp fibres are one of the strongest and most durable among all the natural textile fibres so my straps can withstand a daily beating and will be around to pass down the generations. The plant is very naturally resistant to pests and growth requires little water compared to cotton plants. I choose to use vegetable tanned leather rather than synthetic man made materials (that use petrochemicals) for the end pieces of my straps as I have not found any other natural material that can match it in terms of strength and durability. The majority of designs feature vintage ribbon, painstakingly sourced from around the globe.
I control every element of design and production, from sourcing the beautiful and rare jacquard ribbon to assembling the finished pieces. Hey Laidy straps are made to order in my home studio located in Tyabb on the Mornington Peninsula (VIC). Within each stitch there is passion, pride and quality
